Spalicious @ Somologica

The Spalicious MANDARIN & SANDALWOOD SELF HEATING SUGAR SCRUB (+/-R350):
Enriched with negatively charged christaline mineral found in New Mexico which has a powerful anti-oxidant, anti-viral and detoxifying effect on the skin cells. The formula is also enriched with Kaolin to stimulate the organic processes in the skin by re mineralising it.

I love love luuuuuuurve this luxurious product. The self-heating is intense and the heady, exotic sandlewood aroma mixed with the fresh burst of Mandarin is fantastic. The granules are fine and pampering. The bottle is quite big but be careful not to overindulge. I use it once a week for a bit of pampering. If you can hunt this down get it! It gets sold out quickly. I got main after a consult with a patient at the new premises of the Somologica Day Spa (79 Jackson street, Brackenhurst Proper). They have a plethora of high-end products (Guinot,Six,Essie,RegimA and Nimue) that you can't help buy.

The Spalicious  new self-heating body scrub was sold out as it was launched at Professional Beauty in 2010. Its ever expanding range of products is sought after in the country’s most exclusive spas and the woman behind the brand is living out her passion. We thought that’s something worth writing about. The brand is Spalicious and the brains behind it – Marisa Dimitriadis. So how did it all begin?

‘In May 2005, after having worked as general manager for Twin Care International for five years, I decided to go on my own,’ says Dimitriadis. ‘Part of my portfolio at Twin Care was assisting salons and spas set up as viable businesses and I realised that, at that stage, there was a real gap in the market in South Africa when it came to specialists in that field. And so The Spa Consultants was born.’ As its name suggests, The Spa Consultants assists its clients in the conception, architectural and interior design, development, marketing and operation of beauty salons and spas, and Dimitriadis has lectured and presented business models and operating systems for the spa industry all around the world. ‘My first project was the Santé Winelands Wellness Centre and Spa in the Western Cape and from there we’ve helped establish the likes of the Eagle Canyon Spa in Honeydew, the Mount Grace Spa in the Magaliesburg and Spa De La Veille in Centurion.

‘As I worked with spas over the years, therapists kept saying that they really needed a locallymanufactured, reasonably-priced, “sexy” spa brand especially for manicures and pedicures. I love working with products and seized the opportunity to launch a new brand. That’s how Spalicious came about. In September 2007, we launched a mask, a massage butter, a scrub and a soak – just to the spas I had consulted to and in two delicious flavours – Grapefruit and Thyme, and Fig and Pomegranate. Then suddenly last year, demand really increased and by the end of February we had 61 clients on our books.’

A cuticle oil, quick-dry drops, and a cuticle cream have been added to the range. ‘Then we launched the Rasul Body Collection, comprising three body clays, a face clay and a hair mud mask.’ Some of the newest additions to the Spalicious line include a range of body washes, which come in Guava, Vanilla Latté and Strawberries and Cream flavours; and a dry body spritz that leaves the skin feeling silky and nourished without any oily residue.
‘Our winning product for this year, so far, is the Mandarin and Sandalwood self-heating scrub, which was sold out as it was launched at Professional Beauty,’ says Dimitriadis. ‘The scrub contains zerolite and took six months to formulate to the correct stability requirements, but we finally got there and already our hard work is paying off.’ The Spa Consultants / Spalicious: T +27 (0) 11 234 2150
