New Filler on the Market - Stylage

A new dermal filler that fights free radicals hits Britain - Stylage by Vivacy,  the first Hyaluronic Acid filler cross linked with Mannitol, an t antioxidant found in fruits and veggies that fights the negative effects of free radicals . It claims to reduce the risk of bruises and swelling. Duration is said to be 6-12 months.

Laboratoire Vivacy® is a European company based in France which designs, produces and distributes sodium hyaluronate (NaHa) based products.
hyaluronic the Stylage® product range was created for the hydration and treatment of facial wrinkles and flaws in the skin. The result of advanced technology, Stylage® is a new absorbable hyaluronic acid-based single-phase product cross-linked using the IPN like technology concept.
Its design, the choice of raw materials and the exceptional and expert way it is manufactured, make Stylage® a unique product, with excellent biocompatibility.

THE TECHNOLOGY
IPN - LIKE TECHNOLOGY

Interpenetration of cross-linked networks makes it possible to:
  • Optimize the density of chemical nodes within the single phase gel, generating long lasting effect.
  • Preserve the independence of these networks, ensuring an easy and regular injection for more accuracy and perfect insertion into the dermis, giving an immediate smoothing effect and beautiful skin.

TOLERANCE & EFFICIENCY

Products in the Stylage® range are proven to be biocompatible in accordance with international standard ISO 10993.
Optimization of the gel’s structure using IPN- Like® technology generates a product with equivalent effectiveness for a smaller amount of cross-linking agent.
Furthermore, the presence of an antioxidant makes it possible to reduce the intensity of inflammatory post-injection reactions and ensure a long lasting effect of over 12 months.
Based on a unique manufacturing procedure that takes advantage of the latest scientific and biological advances, STYLAGE® is “the” new filling gel containing reticulated hyaluronic acid.
The IPN-Like® Technology, the presence of a natural antioxidant and the specifications for the STYLAGE® product range ensure that its use is safe and efficient.
Its tolerance, purity and efficiency make STYLAGE® the first injectable intradermal remodelling antioxidant hyaluronic acid gel.

I still prefer Restylane, the first HA dermal filler to gain FDA approval and the most widely researched filler out there. Restylane and Juvederm , are presently the the two top fillers out there with loads of clinical research to back them up

Another Terrible Child Botox Story!

From The SUN newspaper

Ouch! Threading your eyebrows are bad enough but this!
Picture from The SUN newspaper

Markings? How strange are these injection sites? One wrong move and she'll hit her Zygomaticus major!
Pictures From the SUN Newspaper

10 year old Willow Smith
Seven year old Bree Evans is another victim in the crazy world of child pageants. The primary age schoolgirl is injected with “Botox ”  and Fillers by her mother Sharon every two months as well as her eyebrows enhanced with tattoo ink.
The single mum, 33, uses the dangerous (in untrained hands) cosmetic procedures because she is desperate for her daughter to be famous.
She wants her to be as successful as chart-topping American child actress Willow Smith, ten - daughter of Hollywood couple Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. They’re absolutely obsessed with Willow Smith!
Sharon, who took a beautician's course several years ago, buys the Botox and fillers online and injects them into Bree's face herself. She tattooed on her daughter's eyebrows after learning how to do it from an ex-boyfriend who was a professional tattooist (yes and cosmetic tattoo ink is different from normal tattoo ink you daft woman!).
"To be a superstar you have to be different and highly styled. That is why I am doing this. She is my child and this is my decision - it will help shape her for the rest of her life." So says this British mum
Alarmingly, Sharon - who now lives with Bree in San Diego, California - claims giving girls as young as seven Botox and fillers is "all the rage" in America.
"Take Willow Smith - she always looks camera ready, wears designer clothes, has a stylist and wears make-up and hair extensions. It's got her global stardom. Bree is going to be bigger and more successful than Willow.” OMW! "It will also save her money on make-up and cosmetic procedures in the future."

Sharon got the idea to give Bree the procedures last year, after hearing other mothers talking about it at castings for beauty pageants and modelling jobs for their daughters. "I heard some parents gossiping about giving their daughters Botox instead of putting layers of make-up on them. They said it made their kids' skin look more radiant and it saved them a fortune in make-up products. “
Sharon contacted 15 doctors to inject Bree with Botox. They all refused but told her there was no law stopping her doing it, as she had previously trained as a beautician. Botox and fillers are self-regulated in Britain and in the States, which means it is not illegal to inject them into someone so young. She soon discovered that she could easily buy Botox and fillers via the internet. Sharon says: "I bought three 2ml vials of Botox solution, clean syringes and three filler injections for £250.I also went online and bought a starter Botox kit for £150.” Allergan would never sell Botox online! Ipsen and Galderma wouldn’t sell Dysport online coe to think of it. You get loads of fake ,dangerous products online! Is this woman crazy ?
"I had done a 12-week beautician's course four years ago so that knowledge helped. But I also read up on the internet about injecting fillers and Botox through forums and websites."  Twelve weeks! The Somotology course is 3-4 years!

"Then I told her what I was going to do and that if she wanted to be like Willow Smith she'd have to get noticed. Although she was scared she was also very excited about looking like a star.” What is this thing with Willow Smith? Bree says: "I love my eyebrows and having Botox. Some of the girls at school say it's wrong but they are just stupid and jealous. Most of my friends think it's really cool and want it done too. They know that I'm going to be a superstar, like Willow Smith."

Sharon, an office manager, plans to increase Bree's beauty regime to the next level in a year's time - by tattooing a thin, pink line around her young daughter's lips.

Free Botox?

In Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Society of Esthetic Medicine (BSEM) is offering free Botox injections and other beauty treatments for those who are earning less than $250/month.The program was first established in 1998, and since then it has treated more than 10,000 people.

BSEM spokesperson Isabel Alvarez says that the program lets student doctors get experience, and gives the poor luxury treatments they cannot afford on a regular basis.

Apart from Botox injections, the program also offers laser hair removal, acne removal, skin peels, and nutritional counseling.

Cappuccino Chronicles - Fego Cafe

The hubby and I didn't really feel like driving very far but really wanted to get out for a bit yesterday (Friday the 13th!). So we popped off to the Glen and decided on Fego (Ulterior Motive of Sneaking into the adjoining Exclusive Books). Great service at the Fego, relaxed but not slack. Yummy, strong coffee and great Bagels.

The Cappuccino and The Coffee Shake

I'm an avid (lurve, lurve, lurrrrrrrve) Terry Prachett fan, and I've been eyeing this book for a while and decided I wanted it very much, so I just got it while the hubby got the GQ (SA and UK).I Shall Wear Midnight is the fourth Tiffany Aching novel in Prachett's Discworld series. I finished it today which my husband says is a waste of R300 (and complained of a lack of hugs) since I "burned through the book in four hours". As always, excellent reading! I highly recommend getting your hands on the entire Discworld Series, which I do have and will never part with.

Another set of books I've been meaning to blog about is the thought-provoking Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I see copies of the books mushrooming everywhere probably because of the impending "Now a Motion Picture!". Kindly borrowed to me by my 14 year old niece when she was still thirteen (*blush, blush*). I teared through the Hunger Games books effortessly, each book in the trilogy an absolute page turner.

Pageant Mom Gives Botox to 8-Year-Old

If "child beauty pageants" weren't ugly enough! What a bizarre story of this unapologetic, deluded mother who injects her own child with "Botox".

The California mom who admitted to injecting her 8-year-old daughter with botox for a kiddie beauty pageant is now being investigated by the San Francisco Human Services Agency.

"It's pretty unusual for a mom to be injecting an 8-year-old with botox and certainly is grounds for an investigation," said Trent Rohrer of the San Francisco Human Services Agency. Mom Kerry and daughter Britney, appeared on "Good Morning America" Thursday defending the 8-year-old pageant contestant's use of botox.

"I just, like, don't, like, think wrinkles are nice on little girls," Britney said. Britney admitted it hurt to get the injections on her face, but said she was used to the pain. These pageant kids are so brainwashed! An 8-year old obsessed with wrinkles!

Kerry told ABC News that she does not believe she's endangering Britney's health and that her daughter asked for the injections. Kerry, who asked that her family's last name not be used, is a part-time aesthetician and no stranger to Botox herself, having done the treatment on her own face.

"Like I said, I do the botox myself. It's safe," Kerry said. Yes it is safe  . . . only if injected by a medical professional (Trained GP,dentist, MaxFac, dermatologist,Plastic surgeon and in some cases nurses). Is it the real stuff? As in genuine, purified Botulinum Toxin A like Botox or Vistabel from Allergan or Dysport from Ipsen? Or is it some fake, dangerous stuff you get online? This story is so outrageous!
The stupid woman goes on to say "She had watched me do it before," said Kerry. "So when we first did it, she was fine with it." Kerry wouldn't reveal who provides her with the Botox (so damn suspect!). Kerry typically administers the Botox to Britney through a total of five shots, in three different locations on her face.

"As a doctor, if I'd seen this mother, I would be required to report her to protective services because it's maltreatment... Any doctor who would give a parent botox to administer to their children should lose their license…there's not a state where you don't need to be a licensed doctor or under direct supervision of a doctor to inject this," Besser said.

Besser said that botox is used to correct children who are cross-eyed or suffering from some neurological disorders, but not typically for cosmetic reasons.

"If you inject it in the face and it drifts to your throat, it can prevent you from swallowing. If it drifts to your breathing muscles..you can stop breathing. In a young child, if you're chronically using it on the face, it may actually change the shape of your face because your muscles interact with your bones to form what your face eventually looks like," Besser said.

Dermatologist Dr. Doris Day says the drug is generally safe, but she would never inject a minor.

"There's absolutely no reason to use it for cosmetic purposes in an 8-year-old child and so any risk is too much of a risk to take," Day said.
Opinions on this?

UPDATE: Now the story apparently is that the tabloid-esque THE SUN newspaper paid this woman (who says her real name is Sheena) to make-up this story. It's wacky either way!

Mirror, Mirror on the wall . . . Random thought of the day

My mum said that her mum (as in my  Grandmother) would always say " The more you look in the mirror, the uglier you get". Sounds crazy hey? If you really think about it , it is true on some level. What do we do? Everytime we look in the mirror we seem to mentally highlight our flaws so we may have a distorted picture of ourselves. Do you do this to yourself?

Ovelle - from Lamelle

I've been taking Ovelle for the past two weeks now. I've also recommended it to the ladies at the Pharmaclinix talk as well as to all my patients.

THE Tree

After doing some research and an excellent lecture from Dr Bradley Wagemaker (Lamelle Founder) I'm convinced that this is an excellent supplement! I'm about to put it to the test with a sunny holiday to Thailand (you"ll see what I mean later) What so great about it? It contains the super anti-oxidant Pycnogenol from the bark of the French Maritime tree.

 Here's the low-down :

Some studies on Pycnogenol:

1.Treatment of melasma with Pycnogenol®
Z. Ni1, Y. Mu1, O. Gulati2,*Article first published online: 17 SEP 2002
Abstract
Melasma (or chloasma) is a common disorder of cutaneous hyperpigmentation predominantly affecting sun-exposed areas in women. The pathogenesis of melasma is not fully understood and treatments are frequently disappointing and often associated with side effects.

Pycnogenol® is a standardized extract of the bark of the French maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), a well-known, potent antioxidant. Studies in vitro show that Pycnogenol® is several times more powerful than vitamin E and vitamin C. In addition, it recycles vitamin C, regenerates vitamin E and increases the endogenous antioxidant enzyme system. Pycnogenol® protects against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Therefore its efficacy in the treatment of melasma was investigated.

Thirty women with melasma completed a 30-day clinical trial in which they took one 25 mg tablet of Pycnogenol® with meals three times daily, i.e. 75 mg Pycnogenol® per day. These patients were evaluated clinically by parameters such as the melasma area index, pigmentary intensity index and by routine blood and urine tests.

After a 30-day treatment, the average melasma area of the patients decreased by 25.86 ± 20.39 mm2 (p < 0.001) and the average pigmentary intensity decreased by 0.47 ± 0.51 unit (p < 0.001). The general effective rate was 80%. No side effect was observed. The results of the blood and urine test parameters at baseline and at day 30 were within the normal range. Moreover, several other associated symptoms such as fatigue, constipation, pains in the body and anxiety were also improved.

To conclude, Pycnogenol® was shown to be therapeutically effective and safe in patients suffering from melasma. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The cosmeceutical Pycnogenol®
Auteur(s) / Author(s)
SCHÖNLAU Frank ;
Résumé / Abstract
Pycnogenol® (PYC) the extract of French maritime pine bark (Pinus pinaster), possesses various unique biochemical properties, which in combination designate it as fascinating cosmeceutical. PYC is one of the most potent natural antioxidants with demonstrated ability to neutralise all species of oxygen radicals. Its ability to reduce the vitamin C radical and to protect vitamin E from oxidation helps to prolong the bioactivity of these vitamins. Women suffering from hyper-pigmentation (melasma) experienced significant reduction of pigmentation intensity and affected skin area size after 1 month supplementation with PYC. PYC strongly binds to collagen and elastin and this inhibits their enzymatic degradation. its improvement of microcirculation supposedly supports better oxygen and nutrient supply as well as better detoxification of the skin. These unique properties render PYC a fascinating cosmeceutical to support a healthy and juvenile looking skin. Research has shown that PYC displays a pronounced anti-inflammatory activity. In human volunteers oral supplementation with PYC was able to increase the minimal erythema dose in response to UV exposure. In vitro experiments have established that PYC constituents inhibit NF-kB-controlled expression of inflammatory mediators such as adhesion molecules and cytokines. These findings suggest an application of PYC for protection against photoageing of the skin.

 Pycnogenol® binds and protects collagen
Pycnogenol® has a high affinity to proteins rich in the amino acid hydroxyl-proline. These are predominantly the matrix proteins in the skin, collagen and elastin. When Pycnogenol® is added to collagen or elastin, a high amount remains tightly bound. In consequence,Pycnogenol® also tightly binds to the skin. To other proteins such as albumins Pycnogenol® has little affinity [Grimm et al., 2004].Further experiments showed that Pycnogenol® aswell as its metabolites, developing after oral consumption in humans, protects collagen and elastin from enzymatic degradation. These enzymes, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), influence the equilibrium between collagen degradation and renewal. The inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of Pycnogenol® metabolites were lower than that of a known MMP-inhibitor Captopril.

Pycnogenol® increases skin elasticity
humans
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study with 62 women a complex formulation with Pycnogenol® as lead active ingredient was shown to significantly increase skin elasticity after 6 weeks oral treatment by 9% as compared to placebo [Segger et al., 2004].

Pycnogenol® enhances blood micro-circulation
to the skin
Pycnogenol® enhances generation of endothelial nitric oxide (NO) which is the key mediator facilitating arterial relaxation and consequently allows for optimal blood flow [Fitzpatrick et al., 1998]. Oral Pycnogenol® supplementation was found to increase blood perfusion of the skin and oxygen partial pressure increased and, conversely, carbon dioxide concentration decreased [Belcaro et al., 2005]. This study demonstrated an improved healing of wounds (ulcers) in individuals with micro-circulatory disorders. Improved blood perfusion of the skin warrants optimal supply with all important nutrients as well as better hydration to support skin vitality.

Pycnogenol® helps prevent UV damage and photo-ageing

Exposure of the skin to UV-light generates oxygen radicals which in turn damage skin cells and connective tissues. In an advanced stage the destructive processes can initiate an immune response which is grossly visible as sunburn. Activated immune cells cause significant damage to the skin, as they discharged even more reactive oxygen species as well as MMPs which further degrade collagen and elastin. Altogether, the immune response adds significant more harm to the skin than caused by UV-rays alone. Pycnogenol® displays anti-inflammatory potency, as it inhibits the trigger (NF-kB), which governs the pro-inflammatory machinery in immune cells. Oral application of Pycnogenol® to human volunteers was shown to significantly inhibit the trigger NF-kB by 15% [Grimm et al., 2006].
Oral supplementation of healthy volunteers with Pycnogenol® was shown to inhibit the inflammation caused by UV-exposure and consequently protected from sunburn [Saliou et al, 2001].The individual UV-dose causing the first reddening of the skin (minimal erythema dose; MED) was measured at baseline and again after 4 weeks supplementation with 1 mg Pycnogenol® per kg body weight. This increased the UV-dosage necessary for causing sunburn by in average 60%. Increasing the oral Pycnogenol® dosage to 1.7 mg per kg body weight for another 4 weeks consequently further increased the MED to 85% compared to baseline values.
In pre-clinical trials orally applied Pycnogenol® was demonstrated to be protective also against chronic UV-exposure induced skin malignancies. These findings point to a significant photo-protective and antiphoto-ageing effect of Pycnogenol®

Pycnogenol® inhibits melanogenesis and lowers pigmentation intensity

In vitro experiments have suggested that Pycnogenol® inhibits tyrosine kinase in melanocytes and thus lowers generation of skin pigments [Yasumuro et al., 2006].
A clinical study has demonstrated that Pycnogenol® is effective to lighten-up over-pigmented areas of the skin in humans. These brownish spots or patches often develop particularly in the face of women, much less frequently on other parts of the body. This type of hyper-pigmentation of certain areas of the skin is known in dermatology as chloasma, or melasma. Dermatologists have noticed that this phenomenon often occurs to young mothers or women taking contraceptive hormones. Moreover, it has been noted that oxidative stress is involved in over-production of skin pigmentsand exposure to sunlight greatly contributes to further oxidative stress. Often aggressive chemical peeling agents are applied to the skin, even though some are known to cause irreversible skin damage. Oral supplementation of 30 women with Pycnogenol® for one month reduced the size of skin affected by hyper-pigmentation significantly by 37% [Ni et al.,2002] and, more importantly, the average pigmentation intensity of women taking part in the trial was lowered by about 22%. In this study Pycnogenol® was found to be effective to achieve a fair skin without any side-effects.
So far I have gotten quite a few compliments on my skin, I must say! So watch this space because in a month or so we're off to Thailand for a sun-filled holiday and I'm armed with my Ovelle and an anti-oxidant rich sunblock. An important thing to remember is also that any topical agent or oral supplement that affects the Melanocyte at present won't have a significant effect on the pigment already there because all that pigment is held in the Keratonocytes once the melanocyte has released it. Also while using these anti-hyperpigmentation treatments you may find that the problem gets worse before it gets better. This is because as the pigmented keratonocytes move closer to the surface of the skin (natural skin cycle) they become more visible. In healthy skin the skin cycle is normally 28 days so you’ll start seeing a difference after one or two cycles.

Pycnogenol® is a very potent antioxidant
Pycnogenol® has been shown in laboratory testing as well as in humans to provide significant antioxidant potency to the body [Chida et al., 1999].Pycnogenol® is effective for neutralizing a broadrange of oxygen radical species. Moreover, it protects vitamin E from oxidation and recycles oxidized (spent) vitamin C back to the bioactive form [Rohdewald,2002]. Pycnogenol® thus contributes to the antioxidant network in the body. Following oral consumption of Pycnogenol® over a period of three weeks the blood oxygen radical capacity (ORAC) of 25 volunteers increased significantly by 40% [Deveraj et al.,2002].

What l hope Ovelle can do for me?

UPDATE: I've been using Ovelle for two months now and what a difference! the hubby even said my skin "looks fuller". The real test was the trip to Thailand in June. No burning! A slight tan after snorkelling and foofling at Khai Nok island for over four hours! Really impressed with Ovelle!

Blogger Dream Spots - Capri

I'm sure you've noticed that I love all these azure-blue waters of . . .well, anywhere as long as there are azure- blue, crystal clear waters. My next dream spot is the Island of Capri,  Italy.

Pharmaclinix open day

I was invited to attend and speak at a Pharmaclinix open day last Saturday ( 7 May 2011). Even though Johannesburg was being cold and miserable and the N12 was having it's never-ending face-lift the turn out was fantastic! The talk was informal (mainly because it was fairly short notice coupled with the fact that I was in Advanced Botox training the whole week and spent Friday night being entertained at the Teatro by the Dream Girls cast) There was a fantastic Q and A session which I thoroughly enjoyed. Some of the attendees even got some collagen induction therapy with their Dermarollex microneedle device. I haven't used it on myself , I prefer Lamelle's Dermaroller but the principle of treatment the is the same.

So that's the competition I have running at the moment and it ends this Friday (13/05/11). So this is the product up for grabs

New Filler on the Market

Belotero ®
Product Summary
Launched in the UK in January 2007, Belotero® is a new monophasic double crosslinked hyaluronic acid created in Switzerland by Anteis, and distributed in the UK by Merz Pharma UK Ltd.
Generic name
Non-Animal Hyaluronic Acid (NaHA) gel.
What does it contain?
Belotero® has been designed from biofermentation hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in our body; which the makers claim makes it safe and completely biocompatible, as well as wholly biodegradable.
How is it made?
It is created using Cohesive Polydensified Matrix (CPM) technology, a unique process which gives Belotero® hylauronic acid unusual elasticity; (this technolology adds to its “mono-phasic” nature).
Belotero® therefore guarantees a considerably better result from the first hours after the injection and over the initial months, in terms of increased volume and wrinkle filling compared to “biphasic” products.

Belotero® is prepared from non-animal, hyaluronic acid NaHA by a patented dynamic reticulation process. The unique polydensified cohesive structure of Belotero® consists of a cohesive gel which is easy to inject through a small diameter needle.
Is a skin test required before treatment?
No allergy test needed.
Is it temporary or permanent?
Hyaluronic acid is completely broken down within the skin over a period of months, eventually leaving no trace of the filler.
Licenced status
Medical device.
Should be used by
Trained members of the medical profession only.
Product range
Belotero® has three main different formulations within it`s range: Basic, Soft and Intense.
Belotero® Basic (22.5mg/ml of NaHA) is an ideal product for volume enhancement treatments and can be used for deep furrows, lip augmentation, facial outlines, naso-labial furrows, glabellar lines and the correction of facial depressions, either due to injury or age-related scaring. It is injected into the medium to deep dermis with a 27G needle.

Belotero® Soft (20mg/ml of NaHA) is an ideal substance for superficial wrinkles and can be used for perioral wrinkles, lip commissures, crow`s feet, and forehead wrinkles. It is injected into the upper dermis with a 30G needle.
Belotero Intense (25.5mg/ml of NaHA) is an ideal product for deeper lines and wrinkles. It is injected into the deep dermis with a 27G needle.
Not to be used in
Individuals with a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid.
Duration of effect
This depends upon the degree of correction required, your age and lifestyle as well as the correct placement of the product by a practitioner.

The manufacturers claim that Belotero® is long lasting and effective from 6 to 9+ months and suggest that two treatments per year are sufficient for an elegant, natural result.
Reported side effects
Transient erythema (redness), swelling, pain, itching, discoloration or tenderness at the implant site. Typically resolution is spontaneous, within one or two days after injection into the skin, and within a week after injection into the lips.

The manufacturers state that there is no risk of granulomas and no risk of ‘lump effect’ – although the product may be too new to identify these rare reactions which can occur with other hyaluronic acid fillers.
Costs
This depends on the area treated and how much is required, and the practitioner doing the treatment, but price ranges are in the region of £300 per treatment.
