New Filler on the Market

Belotero ®
Product Summary
Launched in the UK in January 2007, Belotero® is a new monophasic double crosslinked hyaluronic acid created in Switzerland by Anteis, and distributed in the UK by Merz Pharma UK Ltd.
Generic name
Non-Animal Hyaluronic Acid (NaHA) gel.
What does it contain?
Belotero® has been designed from biofermentation hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in our body; which the makers claim makes it safe and completely biocompatible, as well as wholly biodegradable.
How is it made?
It is created using Cohesive Polydensified Matrix (CPM) technology, a unique process which gives Belotero® hylauronic acid unusual elasticity; (this technolology adds to its “mono-phasic” nature).
Belotero® therefore guarantees a considerably better result from the first hours after the injection and over the initial months, in terms of increased volume and wrinkle filling compared to “biphasic” products.

Belotero® is prepared from non-animal, hyaluronic acid NaHA by a patented dynamic reticulation process. The unique polydensified cohesive structure of Belotero® consists of a cohesive gel which is easy to inject through a small diameter needle.
Is a skin test required before treatment?
No allergy test needed.
Is it temporary or permanent?
Hyaluronic acid is completely broken down within the skin over a period of months, eventually leaving no trace of the filler.
Licenced status
Medical device.
Should be used by
Trained members of the medical profession only.
Product range
Belotero® has three main different formulations within it`s range: Basic, Soft and Intense
Belotero® Basic (22.5mg/ml of NaHA) is an ideal product for volume enhancement treatments and can be used for deep furrows, lip augmentation, facial outlines, naso-labial furrows, glabellar lines and the correction of facial depressions, either due to injury or age-related scaring. It is injected into the medium to deep dermis with a 27G needle.

Belotero® Soft (20mg/ml of NaHA) is an ideal substance for superficial wrinkles and can be used for perioral wrinkles, lip commissures, crow`s feet, and forehead wrinkles. It is injected into the upper dermis with a 30G needle.
Belotero Intense (25.5mg/ml of NaHA) is an ideal product for deeper lines and wrinkles. It is injected into the deep dermis with a 27G needle.
Not to be used in
Individuals with a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid.
Duration of effect
This depends upon the degree of correction required, your age and lifestyle as well as the correct placement of the product by a practitioner.

The manufacturers claim that Belotero® is long lasting and effective from 6 to 9+ months and suggest that two treatments per year are sufficient for an elegant, natural result.
Reported side effects
Transient erythema (redness), swelling, pain, itching, discoloration or tenderness at the implant site. Typically resolution is spontaneous, within one or two days after injection into the skin, and within a week after injection into the lips.

The manufacturers state that there is no risk of granulomas and no risk of ‘lump effect’ – although the product may be too new to identify these rare reactions which can occur with other hyaluronic acid fillers.
Costs
This depends on the area treated and how much is required, and the practitioner doing the treatment, but price ranges are in the region of £300 per treatment.

Tissue augmentation by injection of Belotero®

The objective of this investigation is to confirm the safety and performance of Belotero® device for face tissue augmentation. This study, realized by 4 very skilled investigators, on 31 patients between 26 and 80 years old, in different injection sites highlights:
  • The safety of the product: no immediate, short or mid term side effects have been mentioned, except some redness that disappear few hours after the treatment.
  • The optimized ease of use of the product , thanks to the ergonomy of the syringe and the behavior of the product under the skin, comparing to competitive products.
  • The very nice aesthetic result that Belotero® procures immediately and within the first month.

Cappuccino Chronicles - Aroma di Caffe, Glenvista Checkers Centre

The dry scone

Killer cream on the Cappuccino

This busy little coffee shop at the Glenvista Checkers Center (Biggersberg/BelAir Rd) is a perfect place for a quick indulgence and a break after standing in the impossibly long Woolies queue. I've been there a few times, they make a good Cappuccino although the cream is extraordinarily and unusually thick and rich.

The scone that day was horrible but they do a great healthy, seeded muffin. Nice place to just have a nice cuppa with a friend and gossip and chat a bit.

A "new" fad - Defensive Aging

This fad, which is in the spotlight now, was apparently sparked by Kim Kardashian who in 2010 decided to get some prophylactic Botox for her potential "crow's feet" . Unfortunately she bruised (although a normal sequelae to some injection sites) .The injector must have been horrified "why me?"
Defensive ageing - an attempt to intervene in your late 20s to avoid even a smidgeon of a fine line from appearing or at least keeping them at bay a little longer. Aging isn't this one dimensional and lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and smoking play a role in the condition of your skin. Also as we age our muscles change, we lose fat in our face, gravity does have some influence.
DEFENSIVE AGING WITH BOTOX -- IS IT WORTH IT?

DEFINITELY

"The time to start Botox is before you need it.  As your muscles continually contract and 'wrinkle' your skin over many years, the lines only seen when the muscles are contracting become lines present at rest.  Thus, if you treat (paralyze) selected muscles before these lines appear (it is normal to have them when your muscles contract), you can slow the 'aging' process, at least as it relates to fine lines on your skin." - Dr. Vincent P. Marin, San Diego Plastic Surgeon
"It is best to start Botox before the wrinkles develop...If you start Botox early, then you are decreasing the stress on the skin and, thus, helping to prevent wrinkles."  -- Dr. David Shafer, New York Plastic Surgeon
"I definitely think Botox is excellent for prevention of static lines in the brow and crow's feet." -- Dr. Matthew Bridges, Richmond Facial Plastic Surgeon
"Botox works best in younger patients because it reverses the trend to frown unnecessarily. Over time, you can actually re-train those over-active muscles and prevent wrinkles." -- Dr. Mary Lupo, New Orleans Dermatologist
NOT WORTH IT

"If you have no wrinkles, leave yourself alone! They will come soon enough, and I don't think you can prevent them." -- Dr. George J. Beraka, Manhattan Plastic Surgeon
"I don't believe you should do Botox preventively.  Your crow’s feet are supposed to crease when you smile...Botox works very well once you have [wrinkles] and I don't believe you gain much ground by doing it prior to actually needing it." -- Dr. Lisa Benest, Burbank Dermatologist
"The downside of starting injections early is that if you like the results you will need to repeat treatments every 3-4 months to maintain your appearance." -- Dr. Kelly Gallego, Iowa Plastic Surgeon
"Botox should not be used to prevent wrinkles but to address them." -- Dr. David A. Robinson, Indiana Plastic Surgeon

There's not much clinical evidence to support this trend , but a study done in Canada called the Botox Twin Study to demonstrate the long-term effects of prophylactic Botox /BontA .The Botox Twin Study shows twin sisters in a 13-year period where one received injections 2 to 3 times a year for the duration of the study and the other only twice; once in year 3 and again in year 7.

Long-Term Effects of Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox) on Facial Lines

A Comparison in Identical Twins

Abstract

Objective  To evaluate the presence of imprinted facial lines in identical twin sisters, one of whom had received botulinum toxin type A (Botox) treatment in the forehead and glabellar region regularly for 13 years and one of whom had not. Crow's feet were also compared.
Methods  One twin received Botox in the forehead and glabellar region (approximately 2 to 3 times each year over the past 13 years) and in the crow's feet (twice in past 2 years). Her twin received Botox only twice (in the forehead and glabellar region, 3 and 7 years ago).
Results  Imprinted forehead and glabellar lines were not evident in the regularly treated twin but were evident in the minimally treated twin. Crow's feet were less noticeable when the regularly treated twin smiled (even at 7 months after treatment) than when the minimally treated twin smiled. Untreated facial areas (eg, nasolabial folds) showed comparable aging in both twins. Neither twin experienced adverse effects.
Conclusions  Long-term treatment with Botox can prevent the development of imprinted facial lines that are visible at rest. Botox treatment can also reduce crow's feet. Treatment is well tolerated, with no adverse events reported during 13 years of regular treatment in this study
The Twin on the right is the regularly treated twin. Amazing difference hey?
Wow, quite a difference.

Is it just me or does it appear that they're not really that identical in this picture?

Lady Gaga . . .just being herself

Singer and fashion innovator Lady Gaga has spoken out against plastic surgery while simultaneously making radical changes in her body’s appearance. The new look that she has adopted includes bony, horn-like protuberances on her shoulders, cheekbones and temples. She says that , “They’re not prosthetics. They’re my bones,” she claims, saying that they appear when she’s inspired. She says that she ahs never been under the knife though. She changes her look so often so it may be difficult to notice permanent changes but she looks like she's had some rhinoplasty? What do you think?

What is a Dermaroller [DermTV.com Epi #208]

Derma Roller V2.wmv

Some Simple Snippets on Sensational Snaps

After braving that nebulous entity "Home Affairs" (okay not really , I hired VBJ services but I still had to go to that crazy place ) I got my new passport in  record time. I hate it! Why oh why is my old one lost? I suspect it is where all lost socks go. Who knows? I'll probably find it after the trip.

I shudder everytime I look at my passport photo - is that even me? Will they let me leave the country? So after this unfortunate photo failure I decided to blog about some simple, age-old tips so you can avoid the dreaded "passport face"

1. Hide a double chin
It’s all in the position of your face. Straighten your neck, but relax your shoulders. Then push your chin out and downward. This may sound strange, but practice this in front of the mirror so it’s old hat when you’re in front of the cameras
2. Avoid severe hairstyles
Yes we know it’s easy to pull your hair back into a ponytail. But these updos can look very severe and harsh on film. Literally, let your hair down! This will soften the curves of your face. You can also do a partial updo, or pull down a few strands of your hair so they fall gently against the sides of your cheeks.

3. Secret to a photogenic smile
Here’s a secret from the modelling industry. Push the tip of your tongue behind the top front of your teeth. This will avoid that stiff smile! Your facial muscles will relax and also help you avoid a double chin and it accentuates your cheekbones/malar area.

4. Make your arms look thinner
Don’t push your arms against your torso. Angle them a little away from your body, so you see a gap between your torso and your arms. A shawl can also help hide really big arms.

5. Choose slimming clothes
V-neck blouses and dark colours are sure-fire slimming secrets. And get a good fabric that follows your silhouette without being super-clingy—clothes that are too loose and shapeless will only make you look bigger.

6. Position your feet
Take a cue from red carpet poses! Position one foot in front of the other, swivel your hips, and then turn feet slightly away from the camera to make your frame look taller and narrower.

7. Smile with your eyes
Think of something happy and pleasant, and look straight at the camera. Avoid the vacant, fake smile. If you’ve been smiling too long, your facial muscles will look artificial, so stop and puff up your cheeks for a second before smiling again.

8. Breathe out
Breathe out just before the shot is taken, since breathing in will stiffen your shoulders and make you look tense and stiff

So does this lady

Cappuccino Chronicles - Fournos Bakery OR Tambo Airport

My Cappuccino with Cream. Quite good! No bitter After taste

Yummy! I love Baklava

Was at the Fournos a little while back and it was a "vegetable day" (fasting, as in no eating meat) so I didn't really have much choice and couldn't sample a real egg-y breakfast. Luckily  there was some yummy Baklava and a good Cappuccino. The great thing about the "nom joints" (restuarants and take-aways) is that the service is quite fast a very friendly. A little factoid - Fournos has been voted best Bakery in Joburg by Leisure Options Readers for the past 13 years. Now I can't stop thinking of Baklava . . .

Lamelle Beta Peel 15% done by Judy Baron from Lamelle

These brown spots peeled off within 3 days of the peel
It looks bad I know and the surrounding skin is red, bronzed and splotchy but after three days
my skin was faaaaaaaaaaaaaaab (high c singing voice)

Yip , some beta-peeled skin.

Visible results:

Fine lines and wrinkles become less apparent
Skin tone evens out
Texture becomes more refined
Oily or acne-prone skin is improved
Enlarged- pores appear smaller
Superficial scars appear reduced
Skin appears healthier and more youthful
Pigmentation is reduced in all skin types (with repeated peels)*

BETA PEEL 15%

Beta Peel 15% is a professional product which is used in Lamelle Pigmentation professional protocols.

Beta Peel 15% is a light superficial chemical exfoliation which contains 15% Salicylic acid in a self neutralizing base. Beta peel 15% assists in impurity removal and is brilliant for hyperpigmentation due to salicylic acid being known for it’s anti inflammatory properties.A Beta Hydroxy Peel is a superficial ,minimal downtime procedure that effectively renews the skin by lifting dead cells off the surface of your skin and stimulating the metabolism of the epidermal cells underneath. The peel is excellent for epidermal hyperpigmentation and fine lines. Improves skin radiance .Acne scars and enlarged pores may become less noticeable, and acne breakouts may be reduced. The 15% is safe for all Fitzpatrick Skin Types.
was quite used to having the RegimA lactic acid peels, the Lamelle Beta Peels are a whole different ball game. The sting is quite apparent on application, it was quite intense (this was potentiated by the fact that I was using Nimue AHA based products at the time) but bearable. Before the peel I had a large zoit that appeared after my not-so-fab Babor experience. Wow , wow and wow! It literally fell off three days after this peel. Looking at my new, fresh skin, you would never know that the zoit was even there. My skin looked fantastic!

The important thing with peels is that to see good results a series of peels must be done - your skin feels great after one peel but after a course of peels it looks absolutely fabulous!

This product can only be used by your accredited Lamelle Specialist or Aesthetic Medical doctor

Olay Regenerist Daily Thermal Skin Polisher - go get it!

I love self-heating scrubs and I find this lilac-hued one very effective yet gentle. Once a week I even use it as a "mini-masque" I apply it for 5 minutes and let it do it's thing. It's extremely effective without being drying! What else can I say I love the product! I can blah-blah on about but put quite simply it does a fabulous job! Go get it!
Awesome experience! I recommend this product to everyone. The self-heating action of the scrub is intense and therapeutic and the little micro beads are gentle with out being ineffective. This is such a fabulous product!

Nimue Sun-C Spf 20 :Product Spotlight

What does this product do? Broad spectrum sun protection. Humectants retain moisture. Antioxidants protect against harmful effects of free radicals. Reduces visible signs of photo ageing .

It's longlasting and comes in a tinted version. I keep it in the fridge at home so when I apply it it feels cool on my skin. It has no discernable fragrance and it's rich and moisturizing without being greasy, it really is a great quality product. It isn't goopy and doesn't interfere with make-up application I use it on my face ,neck and decollete . Although I've switched back to Bioderma Spf 50/100 or I use my Lamelle Anit-Ox Sunblock from my professional peel kit. This is purely because Nimue is quite pricey and not because of product efficacy or failure and I have access to other products. It's a great product.

Yowza! Damn expensive R330 for a sunscreen (compared to Bioderma's Spf 100 which I usually use -it's double the price) but I purchased it after my Nimue Chemibrasion. It is an excellent suncreen with the added surface anti-oxidant protection of Vitamin C ester (as an ester it's also more stable )

Love Love Love this Scarlet "Zoit" Sniper: Innoxa WIPE OUT

This product lasts incredibly long, doesn't seem to "go-off", is inexpensive (about R26) and is very effective. With the essential oils, natural active ingredients and powerful salicylic acid it decreases inflammation and it dries out the spot very quickly. I would just need to dab on once or twice for it to be effective. We always take it along on holiday because the bottle is so teeny tiny. The only thing is the liquid is very "runny" so to concentrate it on a spot, a cotton bud may be used.

Zoits (as the hubby and I like to call them) better beware because this product delivers on it's promises. It has been around for ages and I can't remember how long I've been using it against an unexpected Zoit Ambush.

Rainforest Moisture Hair Butter . . . so unbuttery

This product is pretty average and for the price, bleh! I still have some but in retrospect (since using Philip Kingsley and Freeman) I have made a bad buy. The product is difficult to distribute and my hair didn't feel softer or look much better after the treaments (I tried 3 treatments). So I gave up on it. What more can I say, it didn't deliver
Okay maybe it would have worked better if I used a detangling comb, I felt the texture wasn't right for a hair mask. It was incredibly difficult to evenly spread throughout the hair. I was upset since Body Shop products are usually so fab . It does smell very nice though.
